Character Sculpture is an introduction to the techniques used to create three-dimensional interpretations of two-dimensional designs. Taking a two-dimensional concept or drawing and developing it into a tangible and physical reality is a powerful artistic skill, one that is vital for the entertainment industry. Sculptors have been employed in Hollywood for decades, creating everything from creatures and make-up effects, to props and sets.
Students learn the basic principles of anatomy, gesture, form and design as they spend the term creating an 18-inch clay maquette. While many of the characters and creatures in films and games today are created digitally, a solid foundation in physical sculpture provides the best basis for developing skills in digital modeling.
When the course is completed, students will have a finished clay maquette for their portfolios.
